About the museum
As the preservation work on the Eisenberg ruin brought more and more finds to light, the Burgenverein Eisenberg (castle association), founded in 1980, set up a castle museum together with the municipality of Zell. It opened on May 19, 1985, and after being redesigned according to new museum-education concepts, it was reopened to the public on May 21, 2017.
Five theme rooms and a media room present the research results on the castles of Eisenberg and Hohenfreyberg. Selected excavation finds and picture-based displays explain how castles were built and declined, and how knighthood worked. Special children's stations invite young and old to take part; in addition, there is a virtual tour of the museum online.
Castle Eisenberg is first mentioned in sources in 1340 and was probably built around 1315 by the lords of Hohenegg. In 1646 the Tyroleans burned it down together with Hohenfreyberg and Falkenstein; it has been a ruin ever since. Hohenfreyberg was built deliberately between 1418 and 1432 in the style of a Staufer-era castle.
