About the museum

Gerda Tschira opened the Carl Bosch Museum on May 15, 1998, as a private museum. It is located in the former garage building of Villa Bosch above Heidelberg's old town, where the industrialist's chauffeurs once lived and his automobiles were kept.

The permanent exhibition traces the path of Carl Bosch (1874–1940) through several stations: from a youth rooted in craftsmanship and the development of industrial-scale ammonia synthesis at BASF to the top of I.G. Farben and the 1931 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Re-creations of a laboratory from around 1900 and a high-pressure workshop, as well as two outdoor stations with plant components and a fertilizer test field, make the technology tangible. Bosch's private passions – beetle and crystal collections, astronomy and the Heidelberg zoo – are covered too, as is the ambivalent role of nitrogen chemistry in war.

In 2003, the "Museum auf Achse" (Museum on Wheels), a mobile exhibition pavilion, was added, followed in 2007 by the neighboring building "Museum am Ginkgo" for annual science special exhibitions running from fall to spring. Several of the museum's own exhibitions tour other museums as traveling exhibitions. The museum also offers experiment programs for children and school classes.
