About the museum

The Circus Hostel has stood at Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin-Mitte since 2001. In its basement bar hung a framed portrait of David Hasselhoff, which grew among the guests into a tongue-in-cheek shrine. In Berlin, Hasselhoff is remembered above all for his appearance at the Wall on New Year's Eve 1989 with the song “Looking for Freedom”.

When the hostel was remodelled in 2014 and its own microbrewery took the place of the shrine, the operators decided to give the veneration a place of its own: a previously unused corridor on the other side of the basement became the museum. A member of the bar staff gathered memorabilia over several months, much of it through online auctions.

The exhibition is divided into sections on Hasselhoff's connection with Berlin and on his television series “Knight Rider” and “Baywatch”. The eye-catcher is a larger-than-life mural of the star; also on display are photos, series souvenirs and a replica of the scarf with a piano-key pattern that he wore at the Wall concert.
