The first major retrospective outside Japan of art director Nizo Yamamoto, who created background art for anime classics such as Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies.
About the museum
The Museum für Architekturzeichnung (Museum for Architectural Drawing) opened in June 2013 on the site of the former Pfefferberg brewery in Prenzlauer Berg. It is run by the Tchoban Foundation, which the St. Petersburg-born architect Sergei Tchoban established in 2009 to give the art of hand drawing a public stage in an age of digital design.
The building was designed by the firm SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov. The four-story structure of tinted concrete closes off a row of buildings and is topped by a cantilevered, glazed penthouse level. The facade is covered with greatly enlarged sketch fragments in relief, which allude to the building's use as an exhibition venue. Inside are light-protected cabinet rooms for the fragile sheets, a loggia overlooking the neighborhood and the foundation's archive.
Tchoban laid the foundation of the collection in 2001 with a drawing by the stage designer Pietro di Gottardo Gonzaga. Today the holdings comprise several hundred sheets, ranging from 16th-century master drawings and works by Hubert Robert, Sir John Soane and Karl Friedrich Schinkel to designs by Aldo Rossi, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Steven Holl.
The museum has no permanent exhibition; instead it presents around three to four temporary exhibitions a year, some drawn from its own holdings and some in cooperation with other museums and institutions. It has repeatedly devoted shows to the background art of Japanese animated films, for example anime architecture in 2016 and the original backgrounds for AKIRA in 2022.
