About the museum
The collection goes back to Walter Thede, a farmer and trained fitter from Ostrohe in Dithmarschen. When he gave up farming in 1979, he converted a barn on his farm into a museum and made his two-wheeler collection publicly accessible. Where cows were once milked, around 223 motorcycles from 1910 to 1983 and about 40 bicycles from 1870 to 1993 now stand packed closely together.
The vehicles come from numerous German manufacturers, including NSU, DKW, BMW, Zündapp, Horex, and Ardie, but also many brands that are now hardly known. For bicycles, Thede collected only selected rarities. He restored incomplete finds himself and made missing parts from old drawings or photos, so that all displayed vehicles are in working order.
Many pieces have their own stories. One of the first motorcycles in the collection, a 1926 DKW, Thede found in the harbor of Friedrichskoog and bought for 20 marks. After the founder's death, his son and daughter continue to run the museum.
