About the museum
The museum in Morbach in the Hunsrück grew out of the collecting passion of a telephone association founded as early as 1996, which brings together collectors, supporters and other museums. After about two years of setting up, the house officially opened on March 16, 2001; guests at the opening included the former federal postal minister Christian Schwarz-Schilling.
Across two levels and nine rooms, the museum shows the development of telegraphy and telephony in Germany, from the first apparatus of the 1880s to the present. The collection now comprises more than 2,000 pieces and was already included in the Guinness Book of Records in 1994. The museum places special value on presenting the telephones together with the matching switching equipment; many devices are connected and working, and visitors can try them out themselves.
Highlights include a switching system from Königsee in Thuringia, which was first set up in Koblenz after the Wende (German reunification), was put into storage after the closure of the postal museum there, and nearly ended up being scrapped in 2000. The exhibition is supplemented by videophones, teleprinters, fax machines, models of post coaches, a film room and an extensive specialist library.
