About the museum
The artist Dieter Roth (born 1930 in Hanover, died 1998 in Basel) set up a museum for his work himself in a Hamburg villa on Abteistraße. He personally selected the works from all phases of his career and decided how they would be presented; joint works with other artists are shown as well.
Since his death, the non-profit Dieter Roth Foundation has looked after the house. It maintains the archive, supports research into Roth's art, publishes books and lends works to other museums. Because Roth liked to work with perishable materials such as chocolate, food and waste, and made decay part of his method, many objects are protected behind glass.
A special feature was the Schimmelmuseum (Mold Museum), which Roth created in the 1990s in a derelict outbuilding of the house. For safety reasons the structure had to be demolished in 2004; some original sculptures were taken into the museum, and the rest found a place in a mold room in the new building on the plot at Alster Platz. A virtual tour on the website recalls the room installation.
