About the museum
The museum's beginnings lie in 1902, when the teacher Bernhard Brühl came to Gütz and, with his pupils, collected natural history and historical finds. In 1916 the collection was opened as a museum in a youth home in the Gütz district of Petersdorf. A second precursor was the local history museum in Landsberg founded in 1933 by the postmaster Paul Sannemann.
After World War II, the holdings were moved from Gütz to Landsberg in 1954. In 1959 the museum “Bernhard Brühl” opened, with exhibitions on the prehistory and early history of the eastern Saalkreis, town history and the labor movement, guilds and crafts, agriculture and the local wildlife. In 1961 the Romanesque double chapel “St. Crucis” was added. Until 1984, volunteers alone kept the museum running; in 1992 the house reopened on Hillerstraße after a longer closure.
Since August 1, 2019, the museum has been closed until further notice. After a redesign of the permanent exhibitions, it is to reopen at a new location. The Landsberg Museum also includes the storage facility and the historical town archive.
