About the museum
The foundation of the museum was laid by Elsbeth and Hermann Martin, who from the 1950s collected, restored and catalogued farm household goods and tools from Dachwig and the surrounding area. Through their own pieces, purchases and donations, a collection of well over a thousand objects quickly came together.
For the village's 1,115th anniversary in 1975, the museum opened in the Martin family's own farmstead in the village centre. The residential building is a simple half-timbered house from 1802; the outbuildings and barn provide room to show the exhibits in an authentic farm setting.
In January 1984, the Martins transferred the property together with the collection to the municipality of Dachwig, which remains its owner today. At the end of 2000, the Dachwig Local History and Museum Association was founded, and at the beginning of 2001 the municipality handed the house over to it for use; since then the association has run the museum on a voluntary basis and shows the living and working world of a Thuringian village.
