About the museum
The museum occupies the remains of an Augustinian hermit monastery, founded in 1280 by the town lord Günther von Salza and dissolved in 1539. Of the Gothic complex, the church tower, parts of the east wing with a late Gothic chapel, remnants of the west wing and the cloister have survived.
The municipal museum opened on June 27, 1900, with an exhibition commemorating the Battle of Langensalza in 1866. Since then it has grown into a city museum with many themed areas that links the history of the monastery and the town.
The highlights include the baroque altar cross by the goldsmith Johann Heinrich Köhler and a diorama of the 1866 battle with around 11,000 tin figures. A Bohlenstube (plank-paneled room) and stations on the musicians Georg Neumark and Johann Christian Kittel complete the tour. The tower of the former monastery church can be climbed and offers a view over the monastery grounds and the old town.
