About the museum
The Dorfschulmuseum in Ködnitz is regarded as the first village school museum in Upper Franconia. The schoolhouse was built in 1860/61; the old one-room village school was handed over to its new purpose as a museum in June 1993. The museum is run by the association Dorfschulmuseum Ködnitz e. V.
It documents school life in the one-room rural schools that were common in the villages of Bavaria, spanning the period from the construction of the schoolhouse to the great rural school reform of 1969, which abolished this type of school. The museum occupies the first and second floors of the building; the ground floor is privately rented out. The centerpiece is the classroom on the first floor, arranged as if the children had only just left it. The displays consist mainly of teaching and learning materials, equipment, books, collections and specimens, with particular emphasis on needlework, natural history and history.
