Bayerisches Bäckereimuseum
Museum on the cultural history of bread in the Kulmbach Mönchshof – with a small bakehouse, a three-story mill and a historic bakery.
About the museum
The Bayerisches Bäckereimuseum is the second of the three specialist museums in the Kulmbach Mönchshof, a former farm estate of Langheim Abbey, where the Mönchshof brewery later operated. After the Brewery Museum of 1994, it opened in September 2008 on about 1,000 square meters; the opening was performed by the then Bavarian minister-president.
The exhibition deals with bread as a staple food and cultural asset. It follows the path from growing grain through milling to baking and shows how the baker's trade developed socially and economically. The religious meanings of bread as well as times of hunger and scarcity are also addressed.
Among the large objects are a small bakehouse from the 17th century, a grain mill spanning three floors and a bakery from the 1930s. Further areas are devoted to selling – from the corner grocery store to the bread delivery wagon – and to bread culture from ancient Egypt to today. The operator is the association Museen im Kulmbacher Mönchshof; the museum education center on site offers baking courses and programs for children.
