About the museum
The museum is not a collected assemblage but a print shop founded in the 19th century and fully equipped. Until 1987, the Wildeshauser Zeitung was produced in its rooms on Bahnhofstraße; afterwards the workshop was preserved as a museum.
The exhibition traces the development of letterpress printing over roughly one hundred years up to the introduction of phototypesetting. Among the oldest pieces is a wooden screw press on which the weekly newspaper "Die Hunte" was printed until 1860; from a later period comes a Heidelberg cylinder press, which last printed the Wildeshauser Zeitung. There are also platen presses, a toggle-lever press, repro cameras and typesetting machines of the Linotype and Typograph types.
The hand-composing room holds numerous shelves of typefaces and type cases, the stereotyping room has melting pots and casting equipment, and a separate room is devoted to bookbinding. According to the town, all the machines are in working order. The building is a stop on the historic town walk; tours are arranged by the Verkehrsverein Wildeshausen.
