Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst
Municipal exhibition space for contemporary art in the Art Nouveau villa Haus Coburg with a collection on modernism around Fitger and Stuckenberg.
About the museum
The Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst is housed in Haus Coburg, a villa that the young architect Heinz Stoffregen designed in 1904/05 for the physician Hermann Coburg. The house combined a residence, a medical practice, and rooms for house concerts; Stoffregen later shaped Delmenhorst's cityscape with the water tower, town hall, and market hall.
From 1961, Hermann Coburg Jr. ran the private galerie pro arte in the villa, which in ten years showed around 70 exhibitions of international, often abstract art and regional positions. In 1973, the city acquired the building; in May 1974, the Städtische Galerie opened there with an exhibition on the commercialization of urban space.
Since then, the gallery has shown changing exhibitions of contemporary art and given young artists space for their first major appearances. In parallel, the municipal art collection grew to include painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, and installations. Its focal points are artists from the circle of the Berlin avant-garde gallery DER STURM, the Delmenhorst history painter Arthur Fitger, and Fritz Stuckenberg, whose estate has been on permanent loan to the house since 1998. Site-specific projects regularly make the city itself the subject; since 2021, Matilda Felix has headed the gallery.
