About the museum
Forest, water and iron shaped Trippstadt for centuries: iron was produced and worked in the Karlstal from the time of the Thirty Years' War, and in the 19th century the village was a centre of the ironworks industry. When hard coal replaced charcoal, this line of business collapsed towards the end of the century.
The museum is housed in the former Huber forge on Hauptstrasse, which operated until 1988. The local municipality then bought the listed complex of buildings and had it renovated; the tourist information office is in the same building. The exhibition documents the extraction and processing of iron in the Trippstadt and Karlstal area.
Demonstrations and courses take place in the historic forge. An ironworks and charcoal burners' trail, laid out as an educational path, links the museum with the former production sites in the Karlstal.
