About the museum
The small museum goes back to Hans Georg Göbel, a car mechanic master from Barrien, who ran the local youth workshop “Barrier Butze” from 1997 to 2019. People repeatedly brought him old bikes from cellars, stables and attics there, which he restored to their original condition together with young people. Over two decades, a collection of about 70 bicycles grew in this way.
Göbel was able to realise his long-cherished plan of a museum of his own in August 2022: in a hall of around 100 square metres next to a vehicle inspection station on Sudweyher Straße, he opened the “Barrier-Fahrrad-Butze”.
On display are women’s, men’s, children’s and racing bikes, semi-racers, motorised bicycles and curiosities such as a plastic bike from the 1980s, a Cavallo riding bike or one of the first electric bicycles. The oldest piece is a penny-farthing from 1876, shown as a permanent loan. Bells, lamps and old advertising posters from bicycle manufacturers round off the display.
