About the museum
Energy and water supply in Bremen began with the opening of Hannoverscher Bahnhof (Hanover Station) in December 1847, when gas street lamps were first lit. In 1873 the first central water supply went into operation, in 1893 the first power station supplied electricity to the city center, and in winter 1930/31 the first heating plant began supplying heat. The museum aims to make this long development of the supply networks visible, since the lines mostly run unseen underground.
The sponsoring association “Die Adern der Stadt e. V.” was founded in November 2011. With support from swb AG, it opened the Netzmuseum (network museum) in June 2012 in the building of the former Wehrdamm substation on Hastedter Osterdeich. On about 237 square meters, the permanent exhibition shows original objects from the four divisions of electricity, water, gas and heating, supplemented by films and stories. A collection of writings, books and documents is being built up on the first floor; in the basement there is an archive with over 220 square meters of storage space.
The association's volunteers are cataloging the holdings with museum software, including business reports from Bremen's utilities going back to 1897. The building is currently closed for renovation until further notice.
