About the museum
The Fahrzeugmuseum Suhl is run by the Förderverein Fahrzeugmuseum Suhl and is devoted above all to vehicle manufacturing in the town that stood for the Simson brand for decades. At the end of April 2007 it reopened with a big celebration at its present location in the Congress Centrum Suhl (CCS) in the heart of the city centre, hosted by the then museum director Joachim Scheibe, a former Simson chief designer, together with the mayor of Suhl.
On more than 1,000 square metres, the museum shows over 200 exhibits, from children's bicycles to racing cars. The museum considers its greatest treasure to be its collection of Simson Supra automobiles from the 1920s and 1930s: five of the six surviving vehicles are here, including a Supra A that once belonged to the actor Manfred Krug. Added to this is almost the entire Simson two-wheeler production from 1935 to the early 2000s, from the prototype of the AWO 425 and the mopeds of the Vogelserie (bird series) to developments that were never allowed to go into series production in the GDR.
Suhl motorsport has an area of its own, with the machines of the Simson enduro riders who were successful at the Six Days in 1964 and 1987, and the original BMW racing car of Paul Greifzu. Early bicycles and motorcycles from Thuringia, East German vehicles such as the Melkus RS 1000, and loans from other manufacturers complete the collection. The Förderverein also organises classic car meetings and rallies.
