About the museum
The Schillingschmiede is considered one of the oldest production sites for iron processing in Suhl and the surrounding area. The Schilling family practiced the smithing trade here for 13 generations. The last smith, Gerhard Schilling, was honored with the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross of Merit) for his commitment to the technical monument; he died in 2019 at the age of 96. Production had already been at a standstill since 1992.
From 1993 to 2019 a yearly forging festival with demonstrations took place, organized by the family and the Verein der Ingenieure und Techniker Thüringens (association of Thuringian engineers and technicians); a restored drop hammer was used. Today the great-granddaughter, Anna-Sophie Lendrich, keeps the site alive with events such as summer and Advent markets, and a blacksmith restores historic windows here.
