Felix Nussbaum. Maskeraden

The first major exhibition on the motif of the mask, which runs through every phase of Nussbaum's career, in dialogue with works by contemporaries such as Beckmann, Dix, Höch and Nolde.

About the museum

The painter Felix Nussbaum was born in Osnabrück in 1904, emigrated after the Nazis came to power, lived in hiding in Brussels from 1940 and was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944 together with his wife, the painter Felka Platek. His hometown has been collecting his works since the 1970s; with more than 200 works, the collection is now the largest in the world.

In 1994 the city held an architectural competition for a building to house this collection, which Daniel Libeskind won. His design, with interlocking volumes, slanting walls and narrow corridors, translates Nussbaum's life of persecution and hopelessness into space. The Felix-Nussbaum-Haus opened in July 1998 and was the architect's first completed building. In 2010/11 Libeskind added a two-story entrance building that connects it with the neighboring Kulturgeschichtliches Museum (museum of cultural history).

Today the building forms the heart of the municipal Museumsquartier Osnabrück, which brings together four buildings under the guiding theme of peace: the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus; the Kulturgeschichtliches Museum with the city history exhibition "Stadtspuren" and collections on Albrecht Dürer and Gustav Stüve; the Villa_ as a forum for remembrance culture and contemporary history; and the Akzisehaus for events. All buildings can be visited on a single ticket. Temporary exhibitions place Nussbaum's work in dialogue with contemporary positions; in 2020 the Museumsquartier received the museum prize of the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung.
