About the museum
From around 1880, industrial narrow-gauge railways (Feldbahnen) in the Piesberg quarries carried the quarried stone, at first with horses. From 1912, Deutz benzol locomotives were used, and from 1930 diesel locomotives replaced them. At its peak, up to 20 locomotives and over 2,000 tipping and box wagons ran on a track network of more than 110 kilometers. From 1957, transport was gradually switched to trucks, but narrow-gauge operations continued in parallel into the 1960s. Only a few vehicles survived; the association owns the only two surviving box wagons and one of the two surviving locomotives.
The volunteer association Feldbahn Piesberg Osnabrück today keeps train operations running on two 600-millimeter-gauge routes: the roughly 1,000-meter southern route toward the Südstieg, the Erdzeitaltertreppe, and the Felsrippe, and the roughly 1,400-meter northern route to the Stüveschacht station. The starting point is Haseschacht station. There, visitors can watch the historic locomotives being uncoupled by hand, shunted, and coupled again.
The collection comprises about 30 locomotives and over 100 wagons, most of which are currently in storage. A planned exhibition and repair hall with a museum, workshop, and visitor café on the gravel yard is meant to make the collection accessible to the public.
