About the museum

Limestone quarrying at Rabenstein is documented since at least 1365 and only ended in 1906. Over more than 600 years, miners worked mostly by hand to cut four levels into the mountain. The two lower levels are now flooded and used by cave divers, while the two upper levels form the show mine with roughly 23,000 cubic meters of hollow space. The lime was shipped as far as Halle and Leipzig, and from 1865 the constant temperature of about 7 degrees Celsius was used to store beer.

The site was first opened to visitors as early as 1863. In 1926 the then owner set up an open-air theater in the entrance area, and in 1936 the mine was reopened for tours. During World War II the mountain was meant to serve as an ammunition store; lime-wash marks in the Domsaal (dome hall) and the labyrinth are a reminder of this, although it was never used that way.

After years of dormancy, Chemnitz resident Joachim Grasselt bought parts of the listed site in 2000 and took over the rest of the property under a hereditary building lease (Erbbaurecht). Since then the mountain has been secured, the outdoor areas renewed and the historic buildings restored. Today the operation includes guided tours, catering, a guesthouse and event offerings.
