About the museum
In February 2023 the city of Chemnitz decided to restore the former family home of the Brücke painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff in a way that respects its heritage status. The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz set it up and opened it in April 2025 as its sixth house. It was one of the venues of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
The parents' former country house is an example of the Reform or Heimat style. Together with the neighboring Wohnmühle (residential mill), where the artist spent his childhood, it forms an ensemble at Limbacher Straße 380/382; the garden links the two buildings. The mill is operated by the Förderverein Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Chemnitz e. V.
The presentation relies on original works, decorative arts and documents. Three thematic blocks frame it: the artist's oeuvre and biography, the history of Expressionism in Chemnitz, and the history of the site during his lifetime. The rooms address, among other things, life in Rottluff, school years and first artistic steps, the Brücke years, wooden and jewelry objects, and the war years in Chemnitz. Outstanding is the collection of Victor and Hedda Peters, a permanent loan from the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung together with the Sparkasse Chemnitz.
