About the museum

The painter Anselm Feuerbach, known for large-format paintings of classical and mythological subjects, was born on September 12, 1829, in this house in Speyer, built around 1800. The family of his father, an archaeologist, lived here for about ten years. In 1912 the town acquired the property with its large garden along the old town wall.

By the late 1960s, the run-down house was slated for demolition. Citizens of Speyer opposed this and in 1971 founded the Verein Feuerbachhaus (Feuerbach House association), which had the building listed as a historic monument and restored it with state funding, numerous donations and a great deal of volunteer work. In April 1975 the house opened as a memorial to the painter and his family; in 1977 a wine tavern was added on the first floor, which still combines culture and hospitality today.

Since its founding, the association has collected works by Feuerbach, mostly small-format portraits, oil sketches and drawings, which are purchased or donated after expert review. With scholarly support, the memorial became a museum: in 2013 the Feuerbachhaus was the first institution in Rhineland-Palatinate to complete the museum association's museum registration, and in 2020 the exhibition on the second floor was redesigned after a renovation. It shows more than 30 original paintings and drawings, mainly portraits and self-portraits, along with flower watercolors by his sister Emilie, letters and documents. The first floor hosts temporary exhibitions, readings, talks and concerts.
