Special exhibition on the history of the truck, from early transport vehicles to modern trucks, revised in 2026 with a focus on 80 years of the Unimog.
Because the Auto & Technik Museum Sinsheim had no more room to expand, the sponsoring association acquired the site of the former Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke aircraft factory in Speyer around 1990. The listed Liller Halle had originally been built near Lille in 1913 and moved to Speyer during the First World War; after 1945 French forces used the site as barracks. In 1991 the Technik Museum Speyer opened here as a sister museum to the one in Sinsheim.
The museum grew rapidly over the following years: in 1993 the German Navy's U9 submarine arrived; in 1997 the IMAX DOME cinema with its dome screen opened, followed soon after by the Museum Wilhelmsbau in the aircraft factory's former administration building. Spectacular transports brought in the Antonov An-22 in 1999 and a Lufthansa Boeing 747 in 2002, which was mounted on a steel frame high above the grounds and can be walked through.
In 2008 the Soviet Buran test vehicle OK-GLI reached the museum after a voyage by ship along the Rhine and became the centerpiece of the new space hall with the exhibition “Apollo and Beyond”, one of the largest space exhibitions in Europe. Today the private museum, run by the Auto & Technik Museum association, displays aircraft, locomotives, ships, fire engines, motorcycles and vintage cars in large halls and outdoor areas, many of which can be explored from the inside.
