About the museum
The Feuerwehrmuseum Bamberg opened in 1984 and is run on a voluntary basis by the association of the Bamberg volunteer fire brigade, whose history goes back to 1860. The collection is housed on Siechenstraße in the former prince-bishop's Jagdzeughaus, where it extends over several levels.
The exhibition traces how firefighting, and above all firefighting equipment, has developed since the mid-18th century. The oldest piece is a tub or box pump from around 1740 that once stood ready in Bamberg Cathedral: it had to be filled with buckets and operated by several men using muscle power. Alongside it, the museum shows hand- or horse-drawn pumps and ladders, fittings, protective clothing, alarm technology and fire extinguishers from various eras.
Four red fire engines from the 1940s attract particular attention. Many exhibits also tell a piece of Franconian industrial history, such as ladders from the Nuremberg firm J. A. Stahl, pumps by Justus Christian Braun (today Tadano Faun in Lauf an der Pegnitz) and equipment from the Bamberg bell, pump and fire engine factory J. P. Lotter, founded in 1749. In addition, the fire brigade presents a virtual museum on its website with selected objects such as a fire engine and a turntable ladder.
