About the museum

To mark the 100th anniversary of Munich's professional fire department, a fire brigade museum opened in the main fire station in 1979, built largely by the firefighters themselves. In 1984 it gained its most spectacular exhibit: a subway car that had burned out in the 1983 fire at Königsplatz subway station. The museum quickly became a popular destination for fire brigade enthusiasts and families.

Due to extensive renovation work on the main fire station, the exhibition was closed from 2019. In December 2024 it reopened with a new design under the name “Münchner Feuerwehrausstellung” (Munich Fire Department Exhibition).

The presentation combines historic uniforms, helmets, firefighting equipment, fire alarms, and vehicles with modern media technology: alarm monitors display the operations currently underway in the city, and videos explain the work of the fire stations and major incidents. For children there is a fire engine they can touch, a fire safety education film, and a digital quiz. Visitors who wish can have their photo taken in protective gear. The exhibition is operated by the Branddirektion (fire department headquarters) of the City of Munich; before it closed, the old museum drew around 20,000 to 25,000 visitors a year.
