Antony Micallef – The Future Is Stupid

The first major survey of British painter Antony Micallef, with around fifty works from two decades, bronzes, and new paintings; the bunker shows an animated film and his political Trump project.

About the museum

The Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art, MUCA for short, was created by the Munich collector couple Stephanie and Christian Utz. Their collection began in 1998 with works from the spheres of Pop Art and street art and grew over the following years to include internationally known names in urban art. In 2016 they opened MUCA as the first museum in Germany explicitly dedicated to urban art.

The exhibition venue is a former electrical substation of the municipal utility on Hotterstraße in the Hackenviertel, which was converted over about a year. Since then, solo and thematic exhibitions have alternated on three levels. Since 2019, the neighboring World War II high-rise bunker has also been part of the museum; after the war it was used as an emergency shelter, a hotel, and briefly a nightclub, among other things, and it now hosts installations. The facade opposite serves as a “Giant Wall” for large-scale outdoor projects, for example by JR or Damien Hirst.

Also in 2019, the collectors founded the non-profit MUCA Stiftung (foundation), which has since been responsible for exhibitions, education, and collection work. Major shows have been devoted to Damien Hirst and to the Portuguese artist Vhils, among others. The collection, now comprising more than 1,200 works, toured Japan and South Korea from 2023 to 2025 with the exhibition “Icons of Urban Art.” Since early 2026, the basement has permanently shown collection highlights under the title “UNVEILING,” complemented by a digital hands-on zone.
