About the museum

The Schwangau fire brigade was founded as an association on June 1, 1874, but had been fighting fires long before that. As early as 1830, the municipality had its first fire pump built by a coppersmith from Füssen. Today the fire brigade association runs the museum at Tassiloweg 11 and maintains the former operational vehicles.

The exhibition spans from the present day back to the time of King Ludwig II. On display are several hand pumps, a horse-drawn motor pump, a horse-drawn hose cart, a sliding ladder, and display cases with helmets, uniforms and old fire extinguishers.

The three vintage vehicles include a 1943 Willys jeep, which served as a command vehicle from 1954 to 1993, a 1958 Dodge personnel carrier with a front winch, and a 1944 Steyr that was previously used by a baker. The association's chronicle also recalls the night of June 9 to 10, 1886, when Schwangau firefighters were alerted in connection with the deposition of King Ludwig II and detained members of the commission sent to fetch him.
