About the museum
The foundation of the film museum is the private collection of the siblings Heinz Stammer and Irmgard Kulp, who over decades had gathered projectors, cameras, lenses and cinema accessories. At the suggestion of the town of Ballenstedt, they set up their collection in the north wing of the Baroque castle; in 2002 the exhibition was installed there with their help.
Since then the association Schloss und Schlosspark Ballenstedt e. V. has looked after the museum. The display traces the path from still to moving images and is devoted to travelling cinema as well as home and children's cinema of various decades. Notable pieces include equipment from the development work of Edison and Pathé, a magic lantern from 1890, a 35 mm sound film projector from 1936 standing about 1.80 metres tall, and a camera used by the wildlife filmmaker Heinz Sielmann.
The museum includes a small cinema hall with 53 seats from closed-down cinemas. Both digital films and historic film reels in various formats can be screened there; the museum regularly shows film classics, and the hall can be booked for private events.
