Stadtmuseum „Wilhelm von Kügelgen“
City museum in Ballenstedt with memorial rooms for the court painter Wilhelm von Kügelgen as well as folklore and mining of the Anhalt Harz.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1910 on the private initiative of the savings bank director Otto Korn and was initially housed in three rooms of the Neues Rathaus (new town hall).
Since 1980, the collections have been located in the upper part of the Allee in a stately townhouse from the 18th century, known as the parental home of the Bardua sisters, who were painters. The building is part of the ensemble around Ballenstedt Castle.
Since 2010, the museum has borne the name of the court painter and chamberlain Wilhelm von Kügelgen (1802–1867), who was in the service of the dukes of Anhalt-Bernburg from 1833 and became known as the author of "Jugenderinnerungen eines alten Mannes" (Memoirs of an Old Man); two memorial rooms are dedicated to him. The second focus consists of folklore collections on the working and living conditions in the Anhalt Lower Harz, on the settlement and cultural history of the Ballenstedt area, and on mining and smelting in the Anhalt Harz. In addition, special exhibitions, lectures, readings, and concerts take place.
