About the museum

The Wolfach local history museum opened in 1937 and is therefore one of the oldest in the region. It is housed in Fürstenberg Castle, which was built between 1671 and 1681.

From 2008 to 2013, the association Kultur im Schloss Wolfach e. V. renovated and redesigned the museum through volunteer work, and has operated it for the town of Wolfach ever since. In the process, the Baroque character of the building was restored.

The exhibition tells the town's history and shows, among other things, a town model from 1560. The medieval Hungerturm tower from the town fortifications is also accessible. In the former castle kitchen, the Flößerstube presents the craft of the Kinzig rafters, which was once a privilege of the people of Wolfach: from logging to rafting to side trades such as Wiedenmachen (making the willow withies used to bind rafts), supplemented by a film about the hard work of the rafters.
