Museum am Markt
Municipal museum in a half-timbered house on Schiltach's market square covering the history of the town and the rural community of Lehengericht – with audio stations and free admission.
About the museum
The Museum am Markt is housed in a three-story former farmer-burgher's house on Schiltach's historic market square, one of the typical half-timbered buildings of the old town. Together with the Schüttesäge-Museum, it forms the Städtische Museen Schiltach (municipal museums), which are managed by the town archive.
In 2011 the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned. Ten themed rooms lead in roughly chronological order through the town's history: from the decline of Schiltach Castle through the Reformation and the town fires – one of which is linked to the legend of the Devil and the maid, told as an audio drama – to guilds, traditional costumes and industrialization, which in Schiltach was shaped by wood, water and cloth making. Separate sections are devoted to the former rural community of Lehengericht, whose town hall curiously stood on Schiltach territory, and to its traditional costume, which is still worn today.
Audio stations and iPads with in-depth content in German, English and French complement the exhibits, and a hands-on model explains half-timbered construction. In the former storehouse, the museum presents annually changing special exhibitions on local and regional history, recently for example on the town's 750th anniversary and on Schiltach's soccer history. New acquisitions are shown in the "Dankeschön-Vitrine" ("thank-you showcase").
