About the museum
Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg, known as the poet Novalis, was born at Oberwiederstedt Castle on 2 May 1772. The site was previously occupied by a convent, built up by Dominican nuns from 1256 and dissolved in 1540. After 1687, the present castle developed from the provostry and remained in the possession of the von Hardenberg family for generations.
In 1945 the family was expropriated and the castle was looted; it was later used as a home for the elderly and nursing home. It had to close in 1981, and at the end of the 1980s it faced demolition. A citizens' initiative saved and restored it through volunteer work; on 2 May 1989, a Novalis memorial opened on the ground floor. The International Novalis Society was founded in 1992, and the foundation "Wege wagen mit Novalis" in 2001.
Today the house is regarded as the only literary museum of Romanticism in Saxony-Anhalt. The permanent exhibition shows portraits from the Hardenberg family gallery, which returned as a long-term loan in 2010, and personal items such as the poet's christening cap. The affiliated research center for early Romanticism carries out scholarly work on Novalis, and a MuseumsAkademie offers events for adults and children.
