About the museum

The Fortuna Fundgrube in the Schweinitz Valley on the border with the Czech Republic was driven from 1621 into the late 19th century and was one of the most important mines in the valley; the main search was for copper-bearing ores. In the long run the mine was not productive: in 1881 it was closed after insolvency and sealed.

In 1998 the tunnel was rediscovered by chance and uncovered; since 2001 it has been open as a show mine. On the roughly 45- to 60-minute tour, visitors see crosscuts, shafts, workings and oxidation in the rock, a wheel chamber about ten metres high and a working water-lifting machine. So far only a small part of the mine field has been cleared of backfill.

The mine also became known through the speculation that parts of the Amber Room, missing since the Second World War, or other relocated art treasures might be hidden in the mountain; the tours take up this story. The mine includes the Huthaus with a restaurant, which offers space for celebrations and groups.
