About the museum

The Frauenmuseum (Women's Museum) was founded on May 2, 1981, by the artist Marianne Pitzen together with an interdisciplinary group of women and is considered the first museum of its kind in the world. Its goal was and remains to make the work of women artists visible and to anchor it permanently in art history. The concept was later taken up and developed further by numerous women's museums in other countries.

The museum on Krausfeld in Bonn's Old Town is run by the nonprofit association Frauenmuseum – Kunst, Kultur, Geschichte e.V. and is still directed by its founder today. Over more than four decades, it has staged more than 700 exhibitions on contemporary art, women's history, international cultures, and emerging women artists. The museum also awards the Gabriele Münter Prize for women visual artists.

The collection includes works by artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Maria Lassnig, and VALIE EXPORT, as well as long-term loans, for example from Yoko Ono. A dedicated exhibition traces the history of the women's movement. In 2026 the museum celebrates its 45th anniversary with a jubilee show on the past, present, and future of feminist exhibition practice.
