About the museum

The "Freihaus" (Free House) is itself a piece of Löwenstein's history. It was built together with the town wall in the late High Middle Ages, survived the centuries and wars almost unscathed, was initially a manor farm, and from the 17th century served as a dower residence for the House of Löwenstein. The name probably goes back to a householder who was free of feudal obligations.

Since 1993, the Manfred Kyber Museum, together with an archive of his literary estate, has been housed in the listed building, not far from Kyber's former home. It preserves the writer's personal belongings and presents his life and work.

Manfred Kyber, born in 1880 on an estate in Latvia, lived in Löwenstein from 1923 to 1933. Here he wrote, among other things, humorous animal stories and the work "Die drei Lichter der kleinen Veronika" (The Three Lights of Little Veronika); he campaigned for animal welfare and engaged in cultural criticism. Kyber died in 1933 and was buried in the Löwenstein forest cemetery, next to the grave of the "Seherin von Prevorst" (Seeress of Prevorst). The museum is run by the town of Löwenstein and is open on selected Sundays each month.
