About the museum

Fritz Genkinger (1934–2017) came from Tübingen, studied under HAP Grieshaber and lived from 1974 to 1995 in Rielingshausen, a district of Marbach. He became known, among other things, for his sports pictures, which caused a stir at the Stuttgart Kunstverein in 1969, for large-format posters for the 1974 football World Cup commissioned by the Federal Press Office, and for stamp designs for Paraguay. His works are held in numerous public collections.

The non-profit Freundeskreis Fritz Genkinger e. V. was founded in 2012 in the presence of the artist. Its members include well-known figures from culture, politics and the media as well as committed citizens of Marbach, Schiller's hometown. The association manages the artist's estate and converted a renovated old-town house at the Göckelhof into a museum. The Kunsthaus opened in November 2020 and has housed the Fritz Genkinger Archive ever since: it comprises paintings, drawings, prints, sculptural works and documents, around 1,500 works by the artist. Besides presenting the work, researching and documenting it are among the house's tasks.

The ground floor shows a collection exhibition on various facets of his life and work, including painting and music, sport, graphic art and sculptures made of Böttinger marble; the complete graphic oeuvre can be browsed in a digital archive. On the upper floor, exhibitions on individual phases of his work and on artists from Genkinger's circle alternate. Lectures and guided tours by the curators complete the programme.
