About the museum
In 1985 the city of Waldkirch set up a municipal gallery for contemporary art in a villa on Merklinstraße. It bears the name of the painter Georg Scholz, a representative of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). The Nazis denounced his work as "degenerate", he lost his professorship in Karlsruhe in 1935, moved to Waldkirch, and was appointed the first postwar mayor in 1945; a few months later he died.
When the sale of the villa was threatened, art-minded citizens founded an association that took over the gallery and ran it independently. Since then there have been at least four exhibitions a year, along with readings, concerts, art talks and workshops for pupils and adults. After a foundation acquired the villa, the Kunstforum had to leave it at the end of 2017 and moved into the Bürgerhaus on Schlettstadtallee. A jury selects the exhibitions; in addition, association members show works that change monthly in "Kunst in der Passage".
