Drawings and paintings by Uta Schock, created in close collaboration with Eberhard Hellinge, supplemented by sculptures, carvings and marionettes by the Enger artist couple Hellinge.
About the museum
For six generations the Sasse family ran a tannery in Enger. In the bark tannery, tanning with oak bark was done without machines from 1740 to 1940; the chrome tannery that followed operated until 1995. Shortly after the closure, members of the local history society and the culture and tourism association recognised the value of the almost unchanged workshop; the town placed the buildings and machines under heritage protection.
On 18 March 1998 the Förderverein Gerbereimuseum Enger was founded to restore the building on the Hasenpatt together with its stock of machinery and to run a museum in it on the working world of tanners. Restored machines, recorded workshop sounds and leather samples to touch convey the individual steps of leather making, the history of the trade and the importance of the business for Enger.
With the extension to include the bark tannery, the transition from pre-industrial craft to mechanised leather production can be shown at a single original site. In the converted attic, the association also presents changing exhibitions of fine art as well as readings, concerts and theatre.
