About the museum

The sculptor Gerhard Marcks (1889–1981), creator of the Town Musicians of Bremen statue at the town hall, among other works, decided in the 1960s to establish his artistic estate in Bremen. At the suggestion of Günter Busch, then director of the Kunsthalle, the Gerhard-Marcks-Stiftung was founded in 1969, supported by the artist's family, the Kunstverein Bremen, and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

In September 1971, the museum opened in the former Ostertorwache, a Neoclassical guardhouse and lock-up from the 1820s designed by Friedrich Moritz Stamm, which is now a listed building. Around 1990/91, an extension was added on the south side; a small neighboring pavilion from 1904 has also served as exhibition space since then.

What began as a single-artist collection has developed into a museum of modern and contemporary sculpture. Its core consists of several hundred sculptures and thousands of drawings and prints by Marcks, plus the estates of other sculptors such as Waldemar Grzimek and Gerhart Schreiter, as well as works by other artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The museum also sees itself as a research institute for the history of sculpture and mainly presents monographic exhibitions with a focus on figurative approaches. It has been directed by Arie Hartog since 2009; together with the neighboring Kunsthalle and the Wilhelm-Wagenfeld-Haus, it forms part of Bremen's Kulturmeile (culture mile).
