About the museum

The Kunsthalle Bremen traces its origins to the Kunstverein in Bremen (Bremen art association), founded in 1823 by a group of art-loving Bremen merchants. The association initially collected prints and paintings and in 1849 had its own exhibition building erected at the Ostertor to plans by Lüder Rutenberg – the first art association in Germany with a self-financed museum building. To this day the Kunstverein, with several thousand members, runs the museum, which makes the Kunsthalle unique in Germany's museum landscape.

In the early 20th century the building received an extension with the characteristic sandstone facade by Eduard Gildemeister. Severe war damage was followed by reconstruction and several conversions, including an annex by Werner Düttmann in 1982. Between 2008 and 2011 the Berlin firm Hufnagel Pütz Rafaelian added two modern wings to the historic building; the museum reopened in August 2011.

The collection ranges from Old Masters through a focus on French and German art of the 19th century to the present. Well-known works include Claude Monet's portrait “Camille” and Vincent van Gogh's “Poppy Field”, whose purchase in 1911 sparked a nationwide debate about German and foreign art. There is also an important group of works by Paula Modersohn-Becker and her Worpswede contemporaries, as well as a print room with around 100,000 sheets. Major special exhibitions, for example on Van Gogh in 2002/03, made the museum known well beyond the region.
