Collection of international studio glass art from the Achilles Foundation in the former Barmbek hospital, with a focus on glass sculpture from the Czech Republic.
The exhibition is devoted to the Czech artist couple Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, who established molten glass sculpture as an independent art form, and shows works from the foundation's glass collection.
About the museum
The collector Edith Achilles, an entrepreneur in Hamburg’s mechanical engineering industry, acquired contemporary glass from time to time alongside Art Nouveau pieces from the 1960s onwards. After spontaneously buying two large works in 2004, she parted with her Art Nouveau collection in 2007 and from then on concentrated systematically on studio glass and artistic glass sculpture.
After the death of her daughter Barbara in 2010, she founded a foundation, which moved into rooms in the listed building complex of the former Allgemeines Krankenhaus Barmbek (general hospital). The former dissecting room with its large north-facing window front proved to be an ideal exhibition space. At first the collection was accessible only for events and on request.
Edith Achilles died in 2020; the institution, now called the Achilles Foundation, then opened the collection as a museum with regular opening hours. The focus is on large-format, kiln-formed and mostly abstract works, above all by artists from the Czech Republic and Slovakia; there are also early works of the studio glass movement and special exhibitions.
