About the museum
The museum opened in November 1996 in a small historic building next to the administration building of Ohlsdorf Cemetery, at the exit to Fuhlsbüttler Straße. The idea came from the Förderkreis Ohlsdorfer Friedhof e.V. (Ohlsdorf Cemetery support circle): cemetery staff had been collecting objects for years, old photos and plans were stored in the attic of the main building, and visitors’ interest in tours on death and mourning culture grew. The museum belongs to the cemetery administration, today the company Hamburger Friedhöfe AöR; conception and care are carried out on a volunteer basis by the Förderkreis.
The museum shows exhibits on the history of the cemetery, gravestone culture and cremation, along with plans, drawings, photos and documents covering around 140 years of cemetery history, as well as information on significant persons buried here. Before the closure, there were also publications on topics such as angels and butterflies, mausoleums or gravestone inscriptions, and occasional changing exhibitions on cemetery and mourning culture. The house is a member of the European Federation of Funeral Museums (EFFM).
Since October 31, 2022, the museum has been closed until further notice because the rooms are being renovated and the exhibition redesigned.
