About the museum
The Goldbergmuseum shows how people lived on the Goldberg in the Nördlinger Ries from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. It is housed in the former town hall of Goldburghausen, a district of Riesbürg. The idea for a museum right at the find site came from retired teacher Hans Pfletschinger, who had made finds on the hill as a child; together with a volunteer working group, he set up the exhibition. The museum opened in the mid-1980s.
The Goldberg was settled several times over some 3,700 years. It became known through the excavations of Gerhard Bersu, who largely investigated the plateau archaeologically. A large part of the early finds, which were stored in Stuttgart, was lost in the Second World War; some of the pieces on display today are surface finds.
Particularly vivid are the models of houses, tools and carts that Pfletschinger built himself. At a loom model and with stone drills and stone saws, visitors can try out how laborious Stone Age handwork was. The display is supplemented by plans, photos and reconstruction drawings; outside, circular hiking trails with information boards lead across the Goldberg.
