Stadtmauermuseum
Museum on the Nördlingen town fortifications in the Löpsinger Torturm (Löpsinger Gate Tower) with a tin figure diorama of the 1634 battle and panoramic views over the old town.
About the museum
Nördlingen has a completely preserved town wall whose covered wall walk can be walked all the way around for 2,632 meters – a unique case in Germany. One of its gates is the Löpsinger Tor in the northeast, where the road toward Nuremberg left the town. A first gate tower stood here as early as the 14th century; it was demolished in 1592 and rebuilt from 1593 on the model of the Deininger Tor. In 1837 the tower received a sundial.
In 1987 the town of Nördlingen set up a museum on the history of its fortifications in the Löpsinger Tor. On several floors, display panels explain how the wall, towers and wall walk were built and functioned; a large model illustrates the entire complex.
Also on display are uniforms from the 17th and 19th centuries, a cannon from around 1810 and a collection of around 4,000 tin figures. With them, the 1634 Battle of Nördlingen in the Thirty Years' War is recreated as a diorama. The finale is the view from the 42-meter-high tower over the rooftops of the old town to the edge of the Ries crater.
