About the museum
The Gommansche Mühle is a Bovenkruyver-type tower windmill in the middle of Sonsbeck. It probably began operating around 1840. It suffered severe damage in the Second World War, which was repaired by 1960; cap, gallery and sails were renewed from 1984. After a sail broke in a storm in 1995, it became clear that the wooden structure was rotten, and in 1997 the mill was restored again jointly by the local heritage association, the municipality and the Rhineland Office for Monument Preservation.
Since the official handover in December 1997, the heritage association has used the listed building. The basement hosts weddings, readings and small concerts, as well as exhibitions on local history.
On the upper floor, a permanent exhibition shows regional pottery. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Sonsbeck was one of the important pottery towns on the Lower Rhine and produced mainly earthenware for everyday use, as well as relief plates, tiles, jugs and display bowls. The association continues to expand this collection through exchanges and by taking over private collections.
