About the museum
The Grafikmuseum is a small private museum that exclusively shows original etchings. They were gathered over many years by the artist Ingo Domdey, who acquired many sheets in exchange for his own works. According to the museum, this combination of focus, location and size is unique in the German exhibition landscape.
The permanent exhibition offers an overview of the etching technique from its beginnings in the 16th century to the present day. Copperplate engravings and etchings by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden represent the beginnings of intaglio printing; further developments are marked by works by Rembrandt, Goya, Renoir, Munch, Liebermann and Slevogt, among others. A focus is on contemporary artists such as Janssen, Hrdlicka, Meckel and Grass.
A special feature of the house is the etching workshop of its founder, integrated into the rooms. Visitors, pupils and artists can learn the etching technique in all its steps in courses and workshops. The museum also publishes its own graphic editions.
