About the museum

Since 1966 the museum has shown Rothenburg's situation during the Thirty Years' War. At its center is the capture of the Imperial City by imperial troops in 1631, made famous by the legend of the Meistertrunk.

The exhibition is housed in twelve vaults beneath the town hall on the market square. They include a guardroom of the Landsknechts, fortifications, weapons, cannons and war equipment, as well as original flags of the Rothenburg troops. The opponents are also explained: Tilly with the Catholic League and the Swedish king Gustavus II Adolphus with the Protestant Union.

The tour includes the dungeon of the former Imperial City, considered Rothenburg's oldest prison. It comprises a guardroom, a torture chamber and three cells, which give an impression of the detention conditions of the time. The museum is run by the Verein Historisches Festspiel "Der Meistertrunk", whose amateur actors perform individual scenes from 1631 in the building.
