ZWISCHEN GESTALTEN | HELGA GEBERT

The first comprehensive solo exhibition of illustrator Helga Gebert, featuring her pictorial and fairy-tale worlds. It shows how storytelling in images and words stays alive across eras and cultures.

About the museum

For more than three decades, Kassel was where Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm lived and worked; it was here that their Children's and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen) were written. In 1959, the city and the Brüder Grimm-Gesellschaft founded the Brüder Grimm-Museum, housed in the Palais Bellevue on Schöne Aussicht. However, the small building, which was not accessible, was too cramped for the important collection; it closed at the end of October 2014.

As its successor, the City of Kassel decided on a new building on the Weinberg. The 2011 architectural competition was won by the Aachen firm kadawittfeldarchitektur, and construction began in 2013 at a cost of around €20 million. The building, set into the slope in terraces and featuring a walkable roof, opened on September 4, 2015 as GRIMMWELT Kassel. International media soon ranked it among the best new museums, and the building won several architecture awards.

The permanent exhibition is structured as an alphabet from Ä to Z, combining historical originals with contemporary art and hands-on stations. Its themes include the German Dictionary (Deutsches Wörterbuch), the fairy tales, the brothers' biographies and their political activities. Its centerpiece is the brothers' personal copies of the Children's and Household Tales from 1812/15 with handwritten notes, which are part of the UNESCO Memory of the World register. Changing special exhibitions, an extensive education program, the restaurant FALADA and conference rooms round out the museum, which was also a venue of documenta 14 in 2017.
